Texas Governor Rick Perry will be in Corsicana Thursday to take part in the groundbreaking for the expansion project at Pactiv Corporation.
It was due in large part to a grant from Perry's Texas Enterprise Fund that Corsicana was chosen for the $50 million project. The Enterprise Fund awarded the project $930,000 from the office of the governor. Another $1.25 million Texas Capital Fund Grant was received by the city of Corsicana from the Texas Department of Agriculture for infrastructure improvements for the site.
"Whether employers are looking to move or expand, Texas continues to compete for jobs and investment in a variety of industries thanks to our low taxes, reasonable regulations, fair courts and skilled workforce," Gov. Perry said. "This TEF investment in Pactiv will help bring 200 jobs and millions in capital investment to Corsicana, further strengthening the local economy and providing opportunity for Texas families."
Pactiv is a manufacturer of polystyrene packaging containers for the food service industry, plus other custom products for industry, and has been a vital part of the Corsicana community for over 20 years. Pactiv's expansion plans call for a 150,000 square foot addition to the plant, making it the second site in Pactiv's global network to manufacture Expanded Polystyrene cups and containers.
"The market demand for EPS cups is strong and this will be a great addition to Pactiv's existing, multi-material offering," Pactiv President and CEO John McGrath said in a September release announcing the expansion. "Our customers will benefit from the opportunity to get a broader assortment of products from us. Texas has been a great place to do business for our company and we thank Texas for its support of our expansion project."
Pactiv's decision for the location of the new operation was between Corsicana and an east coast city. Though efforts of State Rep. Byron Cook, State Senator Brian Birdwell, and help from Gov. Perry's Enterprise Fund, the deal to pick Corsicana was struck in September. With that expansion comes not only the related construction jobs, but 200 new factory jobs over a three year period for the new line to be produced in Corsicana.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Pactiv plant at 4501 East State Highway 31. Perry will be joined by Birdwell, Cook and other local dignitaries. Kevin Quinn, Pactiv's vice-president of operations and engineering, will also take part in the ceremony. Paul Hooper, president and CEO of the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, will provide the welcome and introductions for the event.
Construction on the expansion is expected to begin soon, and plans are to have the expansion in operation by the fourth quarter of 2013.
