An explosion Monday morning at Marathon's 578,000 bbl/day Garyville refinery in Louisiana has left five people injured, according to a company spokesperson. Marathon said five contract workers sustained injuries, four of which were treated on-site, and one that is being evaluated at a local healthcare facility as a precaution.

The cause of the explosion and fire is not known yet, but Louisiana state officials said part of the refinery was placed under a shelter in place order during the fire and that Marathon was conducting air monitoring around the area.

The operational impact to the facility has not been disclosed yet. The Garyville refinery is located along the Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and is configured to process a wide variety of crude oils into gasoline, distillates, fuel-grade coke, asphalt, dry gas, slurry and sulfur.

The refinery also processes Refinery grade propylene and key resin feedstocks Polymer Grade Propylene and Propane.
